If you are installing Windows Server 2008 on a VMWare machine and even after adding a NIC you are not seeing it in Windows or the device manager you may need to make a change to your VMX configuration file which can be found in the directory where you created your virtual machine.
Open VMX file with your favourite redactor, then find the section relating to Ethernet add the following line:
ethernet0.virtualDev = “e1000″
Restart the virtual machine and it should appear. If you can still not see the NIC you may not have installed VMWare tools which will install the drivers that are required although generally the Intel e1000 are included in Windows by default so should automatically install.
